The Mount Airy High School Counseling & Guidance Office serves students in three areas of counseling: career, academic, and personal/social. We help students make informed choices that deal with the planning and processes of academic and career development. Every student will have a four year plan develpod with course selctions that prepare students for plans beyond high school - two or four year college, work or military. Academic counseling involves improving classroom performance through removing obstacles to success and improving study skills and habits of learning. Personal/Social counseling provides students an opportunity meet with counselors in a confidential setting to discuss and remedy difficult emotional and social issues.

Tar Heel Chapter of the Military Officers of America ScholarshipThe Tar Heel Chapter of the Military Officers of America Association is offering a scholarship worth up to $2,000 to those currently enrolled in JROTC or dependents of a military member who was wounded or died while on active or reserve duty. State Employees Association of NC ScholarshipThe State Employees Association of NC (SEANC) is offering a scholarship for dependents of members. Apply at seanc.org - deadline is April 15, 2012. See Mrs. Refvem for more details.
NC State US Bowling Congress Association ScholarshipThe NC State US Bowling Congress Association is offering a scholarship for current members of the NCS USBCA and bowling in a certified USBC North Carolina youth league. NC Division of Veterans Affairs ScholarshipsThe NC Division of Veterans Affairs is offering scholarships for children of disabled, deceased, combat, or POW/MIA war veterans. NC Child Support Council ScholarshipThe NC Child Support Council is offering a scholarship for children of members of the NC Child Support Council or clients of the Child Support Program. The amount of the scholarship is undisclosed and the deadline to apply is April 16, 2012. See Mrs. Refvem for details.
Webb Benevolent Trust ScholarshipThe HH Webb and Nora Midkiff Webb Benevolent Trust Scholarship is now available. The scholarship is worth $2000 a year based on financial need and scholastic ability. Deadline to apply is April 1, 2012. See Mrs. Refvem if you are interested.
PSAT Results and Information NightThe MAHS counseling department will be holding a PSAT Night on Monday, December 19th at 6:00 in the commons area. The student score reports will be distributed at this time. All students who took the PSAT in October should attend this session with at least one parent/guardian. The purpose of the session is to distribute and provide a brief overview of the reports as well as discuss the opportunities students have as a result of participating in the assessment. The session will be brief but informative. No score reports will be distributed prior to this event. We look forward to seeing you there!
Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship now availableThe Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship is now available for students planning to attend North Carolina State University, UNC Chapel Hill, or UNC Greensboro. This scholarship is worth up to 50% of the cost of your education. Go to www.cfnc.org/brooks to apply. See Mrs. Refvem if you have questions.
Armfield Scholarship now availableThe Armfield Scholarship application is now available. Seven students from MAHS will receive a renewable scholarship ranging from $3000 to $7500 per year, renewable. Students attending any four year college or university or Surry Community College are eligible to apply. See Mrs. Refvem for an application. Deadline to return a completed application to Mrs. Refvem is February 6, 2012.
Physics Scholarship at Wake ForestThe Randall D Ledford Scholarship to study Physics at Wake Forest University is now available. This scholarship is worth $80,000 over four years. Interested students need to apply to Wake Forest and also send a letter to the Department of Physics. See Mrs. Refvem for more details. Deadline is January 1, 2012.
Summer VenturesAttention Sophomores and Juniors: applications for Summer Ventures are now available. This is an amazing opportunity to go beyond the traditional boundaries of high school math and science. The program lasts for four weeks and is offered at four different university campuses: Appalachian State, East Carolina, North Carolina Central, and UNC Charlotte. There is no cost for this program. Deadline to apply is January 31, 2012. Juniors, see Mrs. Refvem. Sophomores, see Mrs. Winters.
Financial Aid Night November 14thA special workshop on Financial Aid will be offered on Monday, November 14th at 6pm at Mt. Airy High School. Andrea Simpson from Surry Community College will speak about all types of financial aid options and opportunities for students going to either two year or four year colleges and univiersities. Any student applying to college should plan to attend. Parents welcome. See Mrs. Refvem if you have questions.
General Hugh Shelton ScholarshipThe General Hugh Shelton Scholarship is now available. This is a leadership program that pays $10,000 per year and a $2,000 stipend to attend NC State University (total value of $48,000). Deadline to apply is November 1st. See Mrs. Refvem for details.

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar Questionnaires Available`Current sophomores interested in being selected as the school representative for Mount Airy High School during the 2012 summer seminar need to pick up a questionnaire form from the counseling office. The forms are due back to Mrs. Winters by Friday, October 14th. The school representative and alternate will be selected based on the responses given on the questionnaire. Parking is available but will be limited due to a home football game. Plan to arrive early to claim a parking spot. After 1p.m., parking will not be available.
Sun Trust ScholarshipHigh school seniors and current undergraduate college students can enter for a chance to win a $1000 scholarship for their educaiton expenses at a college or private career school. One winner will be chosen every two weeks from October 28, 2011 to May 11, 2012. Registration begins September 16, 2011 and the first winner will be drawn on Ocboer 28, 2011. Scholarship for Writers going to UNC Chapel HillAttention all Seniors who plan to apply to UNC Chapel Hill. See Mrs. Refvem about the Thomas Wolfe Scholarship which provides full undergraduate support to student writers. See Mrs. Refvem for more details.
Park Scholarship Nominees for NC StateAttention all Seniors who plan to attend NC State. The Scholarshp Committee will meet on September 7th to decide the nominees from our school for the Park Scholarship. This is a scholarship worth $86,000 over four years with many additional opportunities. Two students will be selected who demonstrate scholarship, leadership, service and character. See Mrs. Refvem by Noon on September 7th if you are interested.
SAT Deadline is September 9thAll seniors planning to attend a four year college or universiy, taking the SAT or ACT is required. The next SAT will be given at North Surry High School on October 1st. Deadline to sign up is September 9th. Visit sat.collegeboard.org to set up an account and register for the test. The test center code for NSHS is 34280. To have score reports sent to MAHS for free, enter the code 342780. In addition, you may send score reports to four colleges or universities for no extra charge. Morehead Scholarship Now AvailableAll Seniors are invited to complete a questionnaire to be considered for the Morehead Scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill. This scholarship offers full tuition, room and board to the university as well as many other opportunities through the college years. Questionnaires are due to Mrs. Refvem by Noon on Friday, September 2nd. No late questionnaires will be accepted. See Mrs. Refvem for your copy today.

Visit www.fastweb.com for scholarship and grant opportunities. Senior Fees due nowSeniors need to submit senior fees to their first period teacher or to Mrs. Refvem as soon as possible.
PSAT October 12th The PSAT will be offered at MAHS on Wednesday, October 12th during an extended first period. All college bound 10th and 11th graders should take this 'Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.' This is a great way to practice for the SAT. Plus, all 11th graders who take the exam will automatically be entered in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. See Mrs. Winters or Mrs. Refvem to sign up. The cost is $14 and checks can be made out to MAHS. Deadline to sign up is Thursday, August 25th.
